This PowerPoint showcases the B.L.A.C.K. workshops and serves as a representative sample of the academic supports we offer learners. The workshops complement outreach, academic services, post-secondary access, and philanthropic programs by strengthening metacognitive skills, structured study habits, and learner agency without duplicating existing services. Our vision is to activate students’ metacognitive skills, teach independent learning strategies, and strengthen academic confidence, thereby helping to repair the leaky pipeline and complement outreach, educational services, post-secondary pathways, and philanthropic efforts.
B.L.A.C.K.’s approach centers on collaborative implementation with medical school leadership and partner organizations. We embed targeted workshops within existing outreach, academic services, post-secondary initiatives, and philanthropic programs. By focusing on practical skill development and institutional alignment, we ensure that efforts are coordinated, scalable, and responsive to learners' needs across the medical education pipeline.
Dr. Donovan Roy, Ed.D., is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of B.L.A.C.K., a nonprofit organization committed to fixing the leaky pipeline into medicine for Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) students. His work is grounded in his doctoral research, The Role of Social Capital and Social Networks in Supporting Black Males’ Matriculation into Medical School, which examines how access, preparation, and learning strategies influence persistence in medical education. Dr. Roy holds a Doctorate in Educational Psychology and has more than 20 years of experience in higher and medical education, serving in senior academic and equity leadership roles across multiple medical schools. A former All-American student-athlete and college football coach, Dr. Roy integrates discipline, resilience, and performance psychology into his educational approach. Through B.L.A.C.K., he partners with medical leadership to activate metacognitive skills, strengthen academic readiness, and ensure URiM students are equipped to become successful, well-trained physicians.
